Did you know that only 16% of
adults with autism are in full-time employment?
Which means that a shocking 84% are not.
Many never work.
32% are in some form of employment – either full- or part-time but 70% say they want to work and would be perfectly capable of doing so. This disgraceful statistic and hasn’t changed in the past 10 years.
I have a 22-year-old son – I shall
call him N - who has recently gained a BSc (Hons) 2.1 in Computer Systems and
Networking and this blog is about him and his problems finding work and sorting
out benefits. He is clever, funny and loves singing and sci-fi. He would be a huge asset to any employer but has severe communication problems. I will tell you more about him on another day.
In the meantime, The National Autistic Society has a petition calling on the Government to take decisive action to double the number of autistic people in work.
